Cybernetic Communication and Human/AI Interaction

by Brent Jones

As AI continues proliferating in every sector of our lives, join Drs. Norma Jones and Greg Langner explore Cybernetic Communication as a useful way to reimagine the discipline of Communication Studies. We address how AI transforms our interpersonal and relational practices and consider ways we could examine and apply Cybernetic Communication as the borders between humans and machines, sentience and artificial intelligence, continue to blur. We assert that as a field, Communication Studies is uniquely positioned to examine our interactions with technology as well as help ensure AI technologies are developed and used in ways that are ethical, inclusive, and beneficial to society.

Intentionally exhibiting our cybernetic communication practices, this video was developed using a combination of human and AI-assisted methodologies. Let us break down the constituent parts. After using A.I. for over a year in her work, Dr. Norma Jones started considering AI as it relates to the Communication Studies discipline. She consulted with Dr. Greg Langner. They discussed, refined, and then decided to collaborate on this presentation. Dr. Jones then used ChatGPT-4o to brainstorm, draft, and refine an initial script. Dr. Langner added to it by writing his own text and editing the full script. After an additional round of tweaks, Dr. Jones’ voiceover was produced using an AI clone of her voice via ElevenLabs. Dr. Langner recorded his voice, and then his voiceover was synthetically enhanced using Adobe Premiere’s AI sound capabilities. From there, Dr. Jones’ partner, Brent Jones, created the images in Midjourney using human and AI-generated prompts. After multiple iterations, Brent Jones edited the Midjourney-generated images using Adobe Photoshop. Brent Jones produced and edited the video using Adobe Premiere. The three collaborated to refine this video.
